The ten myths customers actually ask about

These are the questions customers ask most often in Polar Tint lobbies. Almost every one of them comes back to a misunderstanding of how ceramic film is built versus older dyed or metallic film — they’re materially different products that happen to share a name in casual conversation. Here’s what’s actually true.

Myth 1: Ceramic tint interferes with cell signals

False

Older “metallized” window film uses sputtered aluminum, silver, or other metals to reflect infrared heat. Those metal layers also reflect radio-frequency signals, which can attenuate cellular reception inside the cabin. Ceramic film does not use metal layers — it uses non-conductive nano-particles to absorb and re-radiate heat. Result: no measurable interference with cellular, GPS, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, satellite radio, or vehicle OTA services. Myth 2: Ceramic is just dyed tint with marketing

False

Dyed film uses a pigment layer between two clear film layers to absorb visible light. It has minimal IR rejection (typically under 10%) and fades materially over a few summers. Ceramic film embeds ceramic nano-particles — typically antimony tin oxide, indium tin oxide, or comparable engineered materials — that selectively reject infrared and ultraviolet wavelengths without darkening the visible spectrum. The two products are not the same thing in any meaningful technical sense. The IR-rejection numbers below tell the story: dyed film can’t hit 80% or 98% IR rejection, period.

Myth 3: ADAS sensors get blocked by tint

False (in the typical case)

Forward-facing ADAS cameras — the lane-keep, adaptive cruise, automatic emergency braking cameras — live behind the rearview mirror inside the windshield, above the AS-1 line. The AS-1 line is the legal upper boundary for windshield tint in every state, which means tint applied legally is below the camera, not in front of it. Myth 4: Darker tint always rejects more heat

False

Heat rejection is a function of infrared (IR) rejection, not visible light transmission (VLT). A 50% VLT premium ceramic film can reject more heat than a 5% dyed film, because heat is mostly in the IR spectrum. The two metrics are independent. This is the single biggest source of confusion in tint conversations — people equate “dark” with “hot rejection” and end up with overly dark, illegal tint that doesn’t actually keep them cool. Myth 5: Ceramic film scratches easily

False

The outer layer of any quality window film is a scratch-resistant hard-coat. Ceramic film is no more scratch-prone than carbon or dyed film — in many cases it’s more resistant. The scratches customers actually see usually come from improper cleaning (paper towels, abrasive sponges, ammonia-based cleaners) rather than the film’s base construction. Myth 6: Ceramic film turns purple over time

False

The purple-tint failure mode is a hallmark of cheap dyed film, where the visible-spectrum dye degrades unevenly under UV exposure and shifts color toward purple or pink. Ceramic film’s color is generated by the nano-particle construction, not a dye layer, so it doesn’t exhibit the same shift. Myth 7: Ceramic and carbon are the same thing

False

Carbon film uses carbon particles instead of dye for the visible-light layer. It’s a meaningful upgrade over dyed (better color stability, slightly better IR), but it’s still significantly below ceramic on IR rejection. Myth 8: Ceramic film doesn’t need professional install

Mostly false

You technically can apply ceramic film yourself, the same way you technically can change your own clutch. The reality is that ceramic film is harder to install than dyed or carbon film — the harder hard-coat resists conforming to curved glass, the IR-rejection layer is sensitive to install bubbles, and warranty claims on DIY installs are universally voided. Myth 9: All “ceramic” films are the same quality

False

“Ceramic” is a category, not a brand or a spec. There’s a meaningful spread between entry-grade ceramic film at 40-50% IR rejection and top-tier ceramic at 95%+. The difference is in the nano-particle density, the optical clarity of the construction, and the consistency of the hard-coat layer.
