Why EVs are different (it’s the radios)
Every modern EV is a connected vehicle running multiple radios that depend on cabin glass for line-of-sight: cellular LTE/5G for over-the-air updates and connected-services, GPS for navigation and Autopilot/FSD-style features, Bluetooth for phone-as-key and accessory pairing, Wi-Fi for at-home updates, and on some platforms satellite radio. Older “metallized” window film — the sputtered-aluminum and silver constructions that dominated automotive film for two decades — reflects RF signals as a side effect of how it rejects infrared heat. On an ICE car with a single LTE modem, that’s usually a minor annoyance. On an EV that depends on connected services to push updates, validate charging sessions, and run navigation routing, it’s a real problem.
The fix is structural: ceramic film built on non-metallic nano-particles does the IR rejection through absorption and re-radiation, not metallic reflection, and doesn’t attenuate RF. Tesla: glass curve and the panoramic roof
Tesla glass is harder to tint well than most installers will tell you. The compound curve on the Model 3 and Model Y front side windows is more aggressive than typical Japanese or European glass, the panoramic roof on the Y is a single curved pane that has to be handled in one piece, and the rear hatch glass on the Model 3 wraps further than most sedans. None of this is impossible, but it punishes mobile installs done in parking lots, and it punishes shops without a proper plotter-cut workflow.
For Model 3 and Model Y owners, the practical recommendations from across the Polar Tint network are: book in-shop (not mobile), default to Ceramic Plus or Ceramic Ultimate Plus on side windows, and ask explicitly about the panoramic roof — the Y’s roof glass is the single biggest IR-load source on the car and tinting it changes cabin temperature meaningfully. For Model S and Model X owners, the glass area is bigger but the curves are gentler. Same film recommendation, same in-shop preference, with the added note that Model X falcon-wing doors require a careful seal at the door-glass edge that mobile installs routinely miss.
Rivian, Lucid, and Polestar specifics
Rivian R1T and R1S
Rivian glass is conventional in shape, but the R1S panoramic roof is a serious thermal load in the Sun Belt and Mountain West — we recommend tinting it as a default. Rivian’s connected services depend on solid cellular reception for OTA updates; non-metallic film is the only safe choice for the side and rear glass. The R1T tonneau (if equipped) and rear cab window are also good candidates for darker rear tint where state law allows.
Lucid Air
The Lucid Air has the most generous panoramic glass area of any current EV, including a single glass canopy on Grand Touring and Sapphire trims. That glass is the dominant heat path into the cabin in summer, and Ceramic Ultimate Plus is the only Polar Tint tier we’d quote for it — 98% IR rejection translates directly into cabin temperature delta during a long charge stop in summer sun. The Air’s cellular and OTA stack is sensitive to RF, so non-metallic is non-negotiable.
Polestar 2, 3, and 4
Polestar uses standard glass shapes with Volvo-derived hardware. The connected-vehicle stack runs Google Built-In, which means Google Assistant, Maps, and Play Store services run through cabin glass-mounted antennas. Metallic film attenuates the Google Assistant voice path noticeably — another reason ceramic-only is the right answer on this platform. The Polestar 3 panoramic roof and Polestar 4 (which has no rear window, only a camera) both deserve specific install conversations.
The factory glass nuance: tinted or laminated
Most current EVs ship with some level of factory IR-rejecting glass — Tesla calls theirs “UV/IR-rejecting glass,” Lucid and Rivian use comparable laminated specs. This is a real thermal upgrade over older clear glass, but it doesn’t replace aftermarket ceramic film. Factory glass and aftermarket film reject heat differently and the two layers compound — they don’t cancel. Ceramic Ultimate Plus is rated at 98% IR rejection on its own, regardless of what the factory glass is already doing.
One nuance: a few EV factory glass packages are laminated with PVB interlayers that are slightly thicker than typical and need to be respected by the installer. This isn’t a film-compatibility issue, it’s an install-precision issue, and it’s another reason in-shop with a real plotter beats mobile in a driveway.
What we recommend for most EV owners
- Pick non-metallic ceramic film. Polar Tint Nano Ceramic in any tier is signal-safe. Don’t install metallic film on a connected EV.
- Size the IR rejection to your climate. Ceramic Plus (80% IR) is the right floor for most US markets. Ceramic Ultimate Plus (98%) is the right answer for the Sun Belt, Mountain West, and EVs with large panoramic glass.
- Tint the panoramic roof if you have one. It’s the dominant heat source on the Model Y, R1S, Lucid Air, and Polestar 3.
- Book in-shop, not mobile. EV glass is harder to install on than ICE glass; the install matters as much as the film.
