The west-facing living room that turns into an oven at 3pm, the home office where the screen washes out, the upstairs bedroom that stays hot at night: that is the Mojave sun coming through the glass. Heat rejection film blocks solar heat at the window, before it enters the room, instead of fighting it after the fact the way curtains and blinds do.
When sun-facing glass lets less heat in, your AC can cycle less. Results vary by home, and the biggest impact is usually on west- and south-facing windows and on skylights. Solar film is nearly invisible from inside, so you keep the view, the daylight and the look of the house.
| Film | What it does | Where it fits |
|---|---|---|
| Heat rejection | Blocks solar heat and UV at the glass, cuts glare on TVs and monitors, keeps the view and daylight | West- and south-facing living rooms, home offices, patio doors, skylights |
| Privacy (frosted, decorative, one-way mirror) | Lets daylight in while hiding the view inside; daytime one-way mirror lets you see out | Ground-floor bedrooms, bathrooms, entry sidelights and transoms, shower glass |
| Perforated | Micro-perforated film that reads as a pattern or solid color from outside in daylight and stays see-through from inside | Street-facing picture windows, home gyms, studios, workshops |
| Security (anti-shatter) | Holds shattered glass together so a break-in takes repeated strikes on the same pane; also helps with storm debris and accidental impact | Ground-floor windows, sliding glass doors, sidelights |
Most homes mix them: heat rejection in the sun-facing rooms, privacy or perforated film where you want light without the view, and security film on vulnerable ground-floor glass. Security film does not make glass unbreakable; it holds shattered glass together. Perforated film works in daytime, and at night the effect reverses, so for night privacy on bedrooms and bathrooms frosted film is usually the better pick.
Neutral, low-reflectivity films keep the outside of the glass looking close to untreated, which is why they suit homes with HOA rules. Read our HOA-approved window film guide and the infrared heat rejection explainer. National overview: residential window film.

Residential window film is a thin layer applied to the inside of your home’s glass. Polar Tint installs four kinds: heat rejection film blocks solar heat at the glass so sun-facing rooms stay cooler and the AC can run less; privacy film (frosted, decorative or daytime one-way mirror) keeps the light and loses the exposure; perforated film gives one-way visibility for street-facing picture windows; and security film holds glass together against forced entry and accidents.
Heat rejection film also blocks UV, which fades hardwood floors, rugs, art and leather. Every install is backed by the Polar Tint Promise.
