ADAS sensors and window tint — do they coexist?
TL;DR
Window tint film does NOT interfere with ADAS sensors in 99% of installations. Forward-facing cameras (mounted internally behind the windshield) look through the AS-1 strip area we don't tint. Side / rear tint has zero effect on any ADAS system. HUDs and infrared parking sensors are also unaffected. Polar Tint Nano Ceramic film is non-metallic — no signal interference.

How modern ADAS systems work
Modern Advanced Driver-Assistance Systems (ADAS) bundle multiple sensor types:
- Forward camera — mounted inside the windshield, near the rearview mirror. Looks forward through the windshield AS-1 strip area. Used for lane-keep assist, automatic emergency braking, traffic sign recognition.
- Front radar — mounted in the front bumper (behind the grille). Used for adaptive cruise control, collision warning, AEB.
- Blind-spot monitors — radar units in the rear bumper corners. No interaction with window tint.
- Surround-view cameras — mounted on side mirrors and rear hatch. No interaction with window tint.
- Ultrasonic parking sensors — bumper-mounted. No interaction with window tint.
- LiDAR (some vehicles) — windshield-mounted or roof-mounted, looks above the AS-1 strip area.
- Head-up displays (HUD) — projected onto the inside of the windshield from a projector in the dashboard.
Window tint and forward cameras
The forward camera is the only ADAS sensor that LOOKS THROUGH glass that might be tinted. Important details:
- Most vehicles have a clear (untinted) zone of glass in front of the camera — the AS-1 strip area. Aftermarket tint installers never tint this zone.
- Polar Tint installs the AS-1 strip on the windshield only (the legally-allowed top band). The camera lens area is OUTSIDE the AS-1 strip.
- Even if camera glass were tinted, premium Nano Ceramic film is optically clear at every VLT for the camera's wavelength range. Polar Tint Ceramic Ultimate Plus has been tested with Tesla, Mercedes, and BMW ADAS cameras: no degradation.
HUD compatibility
Head-up displays project onto a specific zone of the windshield with a polarized film coating that's factory-applied for HUD reflectivity. Aftermarket window tint is installed on the interior surface of the windshield (AS-1 strip area), not on the HUD projection zone.
Vehicles with HUDs from Polar Tint experience: BMW M Series, Mercedes AMG, Audi RS, Cadillac CT5, Genesis G80, Ford F-150 Limited. We've installed AS-1 strips on every one of them without affecting HUD function.
Polar Tint film is non-metallic
The most important ADAS-compatibility factor is the film's metal content. Older window films used metalized layers for IR rejection — these caused interference with cellular signals, GPS, garage door openers, and toll transponders. They could also interfere with some radar-based ADAS sensors.

ADAS recalibration after tint install — not required
ADAS recalibration is required after these specific events:
- Windshield replacement (the most common trigger)
- Camera removal / reinstallation
- Front bumper damage / replacement (front radar recalibration)
Aftermarket window tint film installation does not require ADAS recalibration. The OEM camera is not removed, the windshield is not replaced. Polar Tint never quotes a recalibration fee — it's not a service we touch.
If your vehicle has been in for windshield replacement at a glass shop, the recalibration is handled there. Bring the recalibration record when you come for tint so we know the system is properly calibrated before install.
