2026 window tint law changes — state by state.

TL;DR

Nevada: unchanged (35% VLT front sides, any rear). Colorado: unchanged (27% VLT front + rear sides, any back). Florida: revised in 2025 — 28% VLT front sides (was 28%), 15% VLT rear sides, any back. Most sun-belt states still pending. Polar Tint follows current state law strictly.

Why state tint laws change

State window tint laws are updated when legislatures pass amendments — typically as part of broader transportation safety packages. Updates happen for three main reasons:

  • Officer safety: traffic stops are safer when officers can see into the vehicle before approach. Lower VLT limits favor visibility.
  • Heat / health: states with extreme summer heat (Nevada, Arizona, Florida) sometimes liberalize tint laws to allow more heat rejection.
  • Medical exemptions: states standardize medical exemption processes when too many disparate rules confuse enforcement.

Frequently asked questions

Did Nevada change its tint law in 2026?
No. NRS 484D.440 (Nevada's tint law) is unchanged in 2026. Front side windows still cap at 35% VLT, rear sides and back glass can be any darkness.
Did Colorado change its tint law in 2026?
No. C.R.S. 42-4-227 is unchanged. Colorado caps front side and rear side windows at 27% VLT minimum, back window any darkness.
If state law changes after my install, am I grandfathered in?
Polar Tint honors the legal-at-time-of-install standard. If state law tightens after your install, you're typically grandfathered. On new installs, Polar Tint walks you through the current law so you know exactly where your state draws the line.
Are there federal window tint laws?
No US federal law on aftermarket tint VLT. Federal law (FMVSS 205) covers OEM glass standards, not aftermarket film. Tint law is state-by-state.
What if I drive between states with different tint laws?
Your tint must comply with the law of the state you're driving in. If you drive a 35% Nevada-tinted vehicle into Colorado (27% law), Colorado officers can cite you. Polar Tint advises customers who frequently cross-state to install to the strictest applicable law.
