VLT (Visible Light Transmission) is the percentage of light that passes through window film. 5% VLT is limo dark; 70% VLT reads near-factory clear. Most states allow 30–50% on front side windows and any darkness on rear windows. Pick by climate and state law: hot climates favor lower VLT (5–35%) for heat rejection; UV-first drivers can use clear ceramic at 70% VLT without darkening glass.

1. What VLT means (and what it doesn’t)
VLT stands for Visible Light Transmission — the percentage of visible light that passes through a film. A 35% VLT film lets 35% of visible light through. A 5% VLT film lets only 5% through (much darker).
State window tint laws are written entirely in VLT terms. When a Nevada statute says “front side windows must be 35% VLT or higher,” it means at least 35% of light has to make it through the glass-plus-film combination.
One critical thing VLT does NOT tell you: how much heat the film rejects. A 5% dyed film and a 5% Nano Ceramic film look identical from outside, but the ceramic rejects 4–5x more infrared heat. We’ll come back to this in section 6 — it’s the single biggest mistake first-time tint buyers make.
2. The window tint percentage chart
The chart above is approximate — actual visible darkness depends on your car’s factory glass tint (modern cars often have ~70–80% factory VLT before any film), the lighting, and the angle. Most Polar Tint locations have physical sample books so you can see exact percentages on your specific vehicle’s glass.
3. What each VLT percentage looks like
5% VLT (“Limo dark”)
Practically opaque from outside. From inside, you can still see out clearly at night with headlights on; daytime visibility is fine. Best for: privacy-first drivers, where state law permits. Legal status: Rear-window legal in most states; front-side legal in only a handful (TX, NV with medical exemption, etc.). Verify your state.
15% VLT
Still very dark. Common rear-window choice. Daytime visibility from inside is good; outside observers can see vague silhouettes but no detail. Best for: privacy with slightly less commitment than limo dark.
20% VLT
Noticeably tinted from outside, with slight outline visibility of occupants. Common rear-window default. Best for: the “balanced” privacy-and-style buyer.
35% VLT (“Standard”)
The most common front-side window tint nationally. Legal on front sides in the majority of US states. Looks subtle but provides real heat and UV protection. Best for: daily drivers, balanced look, broadest legal compliance.
50% VLT
Reads near factory at most angles. Subtle visible tint mainly from direct exposure. Strong UV and heat protection with minimal aesthetic change. Best for: drivers in strict states (CA, NJ, IL front-side limits), or anyone prioritizing functionality over look.
70% VLT (“Clear ceramic”)
Reads identical to factory glass to anyone outside the vehicle. Still blocks 99% of UV and significant IR heat (when ceramic). Best for: windshields (front), UV-first drivers, anyone in states that restrict any visible front-side tinting.
4. State legal limits

5. Which VLT fits your climate
Hot climates (AZ, NV, TX, FL, Southern CA)
Heat rejection matters more than darkness. Get the darkest legal VLT you’re comfortable with on rear windows AND make sure the film grade is ceramic (high IR rejection). A 35% ceramic IR Premium film does more to keep your cabin cool than a 5% dyed film — counterintuitively, the film grade matters more than the VLT.
Mixed climates (most of the country)
Standard 35% front + 20% rear is the safe default. Pair with a ceramic grade for year-round UV and IR benefit. You’ll get heat rejection in summer and warmer-feeling glass in winter (premium ceramics have slight insulating effect).
Cold climates (Northern states, snow belt)
Consider 50% or 70% VLT — the heat rejection still helps in summer (UV doesn’t care about ambient temperature), and you avoid winter visibility issues that darker tints can introduce at night or in snow glare. Plus: most cold-climate states are stricter on VLT anyway.
Year-round high-UV (mountain west, high-altitude)
Denver, Phoenix, Albuquerque, Las Vegas all qualify. UV at altitude is 8–10% stronger per 1,000 feet of elevation. 70% VLT (70% VLT, Skin Cancer Foundation Recommended) on windshields plus a darker rear is the optimal stack.
6. Why VLT alone isn’t enough — the IR rejection trap
Here’s the most expensive mistake first-time tint buyers make: they pick VLT and forget about IR rejection.
VLT measures visible light. IR rejection measures infrared heat. They are different parts of the solar spectrum:
- About 45% of solar energy hitting your car is visible light (the part VLT measures)
- About 52% is infrared heat (the part IR rejection measures)
- About 3% is UV (which premium films block at 99% regardless of VLT)
A 5% dyed film blocks lots of visible light but only a small fraction of infrared. A 35% Nano Ceramic film blocks less visible light but a much larger fraction of infrared. In a hot climate, the ceramic at 35% will keep your cabin cooler than the dyed at 5%.
